Who is Yogananda?
Paramhansa Yogananda was the first yoga master of India who lived and taught in the West. Yogananda took the U.S. by storm. In the 1920s, enthusiastic audiences filled the largest halls in America to hear him speak. His initial impact was truly impressive. But his lasting influence is greater still. He was a spiritual revolutionary – a messenger of Joy. His spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi continues to inspire truth-seekers everywhere:
He was an early catalyst for the now widespread interest in yoga and meditation
He championed the practice of a universal, yet personal, non-sectarian science of religion
He introduced in the West the timeless technique of Kriya Yoga
He showed that science and religion are not in conflict
He made the experience of authentic, transformative Joy accessible to everyone by bringing ancient teachings out of the monastery and into the home

Swamis Jyotish and Devi - Spiritual Directors of Ananda Worldwide
Jyotish and Devi were named the spiritual directors of Ananda Worldwide by Swami Kriyananda, the founder of the Ananda Communities, and a direct disciple of Paramhansa Yogananda. Jyotish and Devi have been disciples of Paramhansa Yogananda for nearly fifty years and the light of their discipleship shines as an example to all who meet them.
The Path of Kriya Yoga
Kriya is a technique of energy control, or pranayama, but the path of Kriya Yoga is much more than a technique. It is a comprehensive spiritual path, which includes additional meditation practices, right living, and a personal link to the enlightened Masters mentioned in Autobiography of a Yogi.
Kriya, controlling the mind directly through the life force, is the easiest, most effective, and most scientific avenue of approach to the Infinite. In contrast to the slow, uncertain “bullock cart” theological path to God, Kriya may justly be called the “airplane” route.
Enthusiastically promoted by Yogananda, spiritual community offers a way of living that supports one’s spiritual life. Spiritual community is when like minded people come together in the spirit of cooperation and friendship, dedicated toward a common goal. They invite spirituality into all areas of daily life, whether at school, work, or in the home. At the core of spiritual community are central spiritual practices like yoga and meditation, as well as dedication to high-minded values such as kindness, respect, and simple living.
Paramhansa Yogananda said, “Chanting is half the battle.” Through awakening the natural love of our own hearts and directing it upwards in aspiration, we can find ourselves magnetically drawn closer to spirit.
Spiritual chanting is heartfelt prayer, deepened by the dimension of music and by the building power of repetition.
