Edible & Medicinal Plants of the Sacramento Valley: Seasonal Herb Walk

Many nature lovers turn up their nose to California's Great Central Valley...believing that it is nothing more than an abused and desolate landscape of urban/rural sprawl, agribusiness, cattle farms, and chemical factories. While it IS true that this rather sizable section of the state has been compromised to a significant degree over the centuries, the few remaining natural areas are MOST spectacular and absolutely teaming with biological diversity. Not only that, but many would be quite surprised to learn of the unique variety of edible & medicinal plants found thriving in this overlooked and often under appreciated bioregion. Join us as we explore the diverse array of both edible and medicinal plants found growing near the banks of the North Fork American River as it descends from the high country into the foothills bordering the Sacramento Valley. Historical and modern medicinal applications will be covered along with any edible and/or utilitarian potential. Tips on basic/intermediate plant identification will be offered with a special emphasis on plant family characteristics as well as differentiating poisonous look-alike plants from their beneficial counterparts.
